The One Question Every Scholar Should Answer Before Writing Their Common App Essay

Most scholars sit down to write their college essay and immediately ask: "What should I write about?"

That's the wrong question.

Before you pick a topic, you need to answer this one first.

"So what does this say about me?"

That's it. That's the question.

Not "what happened?" Not "what did I learn?" Not "what's a good story?"

So. What. Does. This. Say. About. Me.

Because colleges aren't reading your essay to find out what you've done. They're reading it to find out who you are. And those are two very different things.

Here's What This Looks Like in Practice

Say a scholar wants to write about playing piano since age five.

"What happened?" gets you: I played piano for twelve years.

"So what does this say about me?" gets you: I use music to process things I can't say out loud. I've always needed a way to translate feeling into something structured. That's also why I'm drawn to math. Both have rules, and both have space for something unexpected inside those rules.

The first is a resume bullet. The second is a person.

Why Most Essays Fall Flat

Scholars write about the thing instead of through it.

They describe the mission trip, the championship game, the community service hours. They list what happened. They explain what they learned. And then they're done.

But the admissions officer closes the tab and can't remember anything specific about that scholar.

Because the essay never got to the person.

A great essay uses the story as a doorway. The reader walks through it and finds the scholar on the other side.

How to Use This Question Before You Write

Grab a piece of paper. Write down two or three moments, experiences, or things you care about.

Then, for each one, ask yourself: so what does this say about me?

Write whatever comes. Don't edit it. Don't make it pretty.

If your answer surprises you a little, you're probably close to something real.

If your answer sounds like something you'd put on a resume, keep digging.
