Did you know a strong letter of recommendation can boost your teen’s college admissions chances by up to 15–20%? However, even the most supportive teacher or coach can’t write a great letter without some context, and that’s where a brag sheet comes in.
Despite the name, it’s not about bragging. A brag sheet is a short, reflective worksheet that helps students share their story in a specific, meaningful way. It gives recommenders what they need to write letters that are personal, thoughtful, and memorable.
Bonus? It also helps students clarify their strengths, goals, and growth, kind of like a warm-up for building a college resume.
When (and How) to Ask
If your teen is a rising senior, the best time to ask is now. Yes, even in summer.
Many students think teachers don’t want to be asked over break, but in reality, this is when many prefer to write. No grading, fewer distractions, and more time to reflect.
Sample Email to a Teacher or Recommender:

Hi [Name], I hope you're enjoying your summer! I'm starting to work on my college applications and would be so grateful if you'd consider writing me a letter of recommendation. I’ve attached a short brag sheet in case it’s helpful as you think about what to include.
I really enjoyed your [class/project], and I appreciated how you [taught/guided/supported me with ___]. That’s why I thought of you for this letter.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
✅ Pro Tip: Personalize the second paragraph with a quick example; it makes all the difference.
💡If asking during the school year, be sure to give 3–4 weeks’ notice before the deadline.
How Many Recommendations Do You Need?
Most colleges ask for:
1–2 teacher letters (Try to have at least one be from a core subject teacher or related to their intended major)
1 school counselor letter
Optional: 1 extra letter from a coach, mentor, or community leader (if allowed)
Choose people who know your teen well and can speak to their character, growth, and contributions, not just their grades.
What Should a Brag Sheet Include?

Even if you don’t use our version, a great brag sheet should answer questions like:
How does the student know the recommender?
What are they passionate about (inside and outside school)?
What strengths or skills do they want highlighted?
Any specific moments, stories, or improvements that stand out?
Why are they asking this person in particular?
A brief thank-you message
